Q: Why should I hire a professional DJ instead of using a playlist?
A: While a playlist might seem convenient, it lacks the personal touch of a live DJ. Our DJs do more than just play music—they read the room, adjust to the vibe, and make sure the energy is always high. Q: What’s your secret to helping clients select the perfect tracks for their playlist?
A: Clients should be aware that besides their actual wedding, the dance floor is just as important if they want an awesome reception! I would always recommend asking their guests what kind of music that they would want to hear. Really dig deep into what their music interest is. Involve the entire wedding party for your music selection, because believe it or not they’re the life of the party.
Q: How can clients select the perfect songs for key moments of their event, like the ceremony, reception, and dance floor?
A: The ceremony is the most intimate part of the wedding. Create a playlist that’s intimate between the Bride & Groom. It could be a song from your very first date or songs from a particular time and place that was special between the couple. Reception & dance floor are the hype moments of the night; we want to get the guest entertained. I can’t stress how important it is to make the reception as fun as possible to have a great night
Q: Can you walk us through how you create a custom playlist for a special event? What’s your approach?
A: Most of the time, I leave it up to the clients to come up with about 25-50 songs to help me create around the type of music being heard for the night. If the client has multiple genres of music, I will input my own songs to create a specialized list for them.
Q: Do you have any memorable stories about handling special song requests or unique music preferences from clients?
A: Of course! I’ve had a bride ask me to play 2 songs before she walked down the stairs to the middle of the dance floor. I’d loop the first song which was a live instrumental, and once she reached the dance floor where her husband was sitting in a chair, I switched it to the original song she wanted which transformed into a dance routine between her & her bridesmaids! As far as the most unique playlist I’ve ever played would have to be when I DJ’d a Napali wedding. They had nothing but Nepali music, but it was very uptempo, and I had a lot of fun at their wedding.
Q: How do you keep the energy up and adjust the playlist if the crowd’s mood changes during the event?
A: Every wedding is different. The main thing as a DJ that I focus on is what are the add-ons such as photo booths, open bar, fun formality games, etc. They’re all vital because leading up to the open dance floor will determine the energy for late on in the night. My experience as a DJ and doing so many weddings as taught me that I don’t have to keep it at high energy all night. I compare the dance floor to a roller coaster. You have to bring the crowd down at times because you don’t want to burn the guests out with high energy songs and back-to-back line dances. My job is to create an atmosphere where everyone, from younger to older can have a great time.
